Asian Forest Scorpion
Heterometrus spinifer
The Asian forest scorpion (Heterometrus spinifer) is a large, dark scorpion from humid forests of Southeast Asia. It is often sold under broad trade names along with related Heterometrus species, so exact identification can be uncertain without locality or specialist examination. Adults have glossy black bodies, strong pincers, and a thick tail. Their sting is painful and medically significant for some people, though the pincers are often the first defensive tool.
Captive care is based on a warm, humid terrarium with deep substrate, a tight lid, and secure hides. These scorpions feed on roaches, crickets, and other appropriately sized invertebrates, and uneaten prey should not be left with molting animals. Handling is poor practice; tools and catch cups are safer for transfers. They are usually kept singly unless breeding is planned, since crowding can lead to cannibalism. Buyers should confirm species, source, and local regulations before bringing one home.
