Arrau River Turtle
Podocnemis expansa
The arrau is a large side-necked turtle of the Amazon and Orinoco river systems. Adults have a broad, low dark shell and a large head; bright juvenile head spots fade with age. It lays eggs on exposed river beaches and is kept in zoo and conservation collections. Its size and tropical origin call for a substantial warm swimming area, effective filtration and accessible land for basking and nesting. It is listed under the US Endangered Species Act.
