Unknown Variety
Unknown variety angelfish are domestic Pterophyllum scalare whose variety was not recorded or cannot be identified from the available information. The fish may be silver, marble, koi, gold, black, pearlscale, smokey, zebra, or a combination, but the label says the record is incomplete. This is common when fish move through rescues, mixed retail tanks, hobbyist rehoming, or older breeding projects where parentage notes were not kept.
An unknown variety label should not reduce the animal to a mystery fish. Keepers can still record body shape, fin condition, color pattern, scale texture, sex if known, and behavioral notes. If breeding is planned, the unknown background matters because fry may show unexpected colors or patterns. For ordinary aquarium care, variety is less important than water quality, nutrition, tank height, stable temperature, and compatibility. Buyers should be told what is known and what is not, especially if they are seeking a specific strain.
