Amethystine Python
Simalia amethistina
The amethystine python is a large egg-laying python of New Guinea and neighboring islands. Its olive-brown to tan scales show a strong iridescent sheen, often with irregular darker markings, and its long body is suited to climbing. It is kept by zoos and experienced python keepers who can provide secure adult-sized space, robust branches, retreats and controlled heating. The Australian scrub python Simalia kinghorni was separated from this species, so older Australian locality labels should not automatically be assigned here.
