American Crocodile
Crocodylus acutus
The American crocodile is an egg-laying crocodilian of tropical American coasts, rivers and estuaries, reaching southern Florida. Adults have a long relatively narrow snout and a gray to olive armored body. It is managed in zoos and conservation collections that can provide secure separation, large water areas and dry nesting land.
It presents a serious injury risk. US ESA status is threatened for the Florida population and endangered elsewhere. CITES Appendix I applies except for named Appendix II populations, and possession permits vary by jurisdiction.
