African Slender-Snouted Crocodile
Mecistops cataphractus
The African slender-snouted crocodile is an egg-laying West African crocodilian associated with forest rivers and wetlands. Its long narrow snout and armored neck distinguish it from broad-snouted crocodiles. Mecistops leptorhynchus represents the Central African lineage separated from this species.
Captive management belongs to equipped zoo or specialist facilities with secure barriers, substantial clean water and dry land. It is US ESA endangered and CITES Appendix I, and crocodilian possession is subject to permit regimes.
