African Rock Python
Python sebae
The African rock python is a very large egg-laying constrictor from sub-Saharan Africa. Its heavy body carries irregular dark blotches with pale borders, and its head has contrasting crown and face markings. Zoos and experienced large-snake keepers need secure accommodation sized for an adult, strong retreats and controlled heating.
Adult strength presents a serious handling risk. Python sebae is listed as injurious under the US Lacey Act; importation and certain shipments are restricted. The southern African python, Python natalensis, is separate.
