African Mud Turtle
Pelusios castaneus
The African mud turtle is an egg-laying freshwater side-neck turtle of West Africa. It has a brown oval shell, a pale underside with a hinged front section and a broad head that folds sideways beneath the shell. It occurs in quiet rivers, lakes and pools and is kept by specialist turtle keepers. Captive housing needs filtered freshwater, accessible resting places and a land area for retreat and nesting. Pelusios chapini, formerly treated as a subspecies, is a separate species.
