African Dwarf Mud Turtle
Pelusios nanus
The African dwarf mud turtle is a small freshwater side-neck turtle of south-central Africa, including Zambia and the southern Congo Basin. Its compact brown shell and sideways-folding neck place it among the hinged-plastron Pelusios turtles. It is a specialist captive species rather than a typical basking-slider pet. Housing must provide clean freshwater, easy access to the surface and secure land retreats. Like other turtles it lays eggs on land, so mature females need access to suitable nesting substrate.
