Aesculapean Snake
Zamenis longissimus
The Aesculapean snake is an egg-laying European and western Asian ratsnake that uses woodland edges, scrub and climbing routes. Adults are usually olive-brown with a pale underside and scattered light flecks, rather than the strong blotches of many other ratsnakes.
It is established in specialist captive collections. Housing needs secure floor space, sturdy climbing supports, sheltered retreats and a controlled thermal gradient. The Italian snake Zamenis lineatus is a separate species, not a color form of this one.
