Adder
Vipera berus
The adder is a live-bearing viper of temperate Europe and northern Asia, found in heathland, woodland edges and other sheltered habitats. Typical adults have a dark dorsal zigzag on a gray or brown ground, although natural melanistic animals occur. It is kept by specialist collections rather than as a routine pet.
Captive accommodation needs secure retreats and a controlled thermal gradient that reflects its temperate origin. Its venom is medically significant, and possession can require a dangerous-animal license.
