Wildlife Lakes Elk Farm
Wildlife Lakes Elk Farm raises elk just outside West Burlington, Iowa, in the southeastern corner of the state about ten minutes from the Mississippi River and near the city of Burlington. Henry and Barb Bohlen founded the operation and have been raising elk for over thirty years, building one of the longer-running elk programs in the region.
The farm's origins trace back to a fondness for water and wildlife. The Bohlens developed a property centered on a series of man-made ponds and lakes, first breeding Giant Canadian Geese before adding mule deer and eventually transitioning to elk. That early progression shaped a farm where elk share the landscape with waterfowl, including trumpeter swans raised in cooperation with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as part of a swan reintroduction effort.
With around 100 animals on site, the program covers elk for breeding stock, trophy bulls, and antler production, with bulls kept year-round and calves born each spring. Those looking for elk breeders in Iowa will find the Bohlens' focus squarely on strong genetic backgrounds, a priority they have emphasized throughout their decades in the business.
