About Smokey Valley Farm

Smokey Valley raises miniature zebu cattle in Toledo, Washington, a small community in Lewis County just off I-5 in the southwest part of the state, not far from Chehalis. Michelle Shannon and her husband Rick have operated the farm since 1976, building a herd focused on purebred, dual-registered micro and miniature zebu cattle for buyers across the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The program places strong emphasis on two standards that are non-negotiable on the farm: temperament and genetic health. Every animal in the herd is tame, gentle, and halter-broken, a baseline the Shannons hold firm on regardless of age or gender. All females are de-horned for ease of management, and the cattle are handled daily so they remain comfortable around people. The entire herd has been tested and confirmed clear of the BDMz and BD1 dwarf genes, meaning their small stature is the product of careful, selective breeding over generations rather than a genetic condition.

All stock is registered with both the IMZA and AMZA, and the Shannons actively exhibit their animals at summer fairs and shows, including 4-H events where their grandchildren participate as handlers. For anyone searching for miniature zebu cattle in Washington state, Smokey Valley represents one of the longer-running programs in the region, with a herd that includes more than 20 cows and several bulls at varying micro and standard miniature sizes.
