Rowdy Cow Ranch

Rowdy Cow Ranch raises 100% grass-fed belted Galloway cattle in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, in the Craftsbury area northeast of Montpelier. Alex Howe, who grew up on a farm in New Hampshire and studied ecological agriculture at the University of Vermont, started the herd in spring 2020 after acquiring the ranch's founding cow-calf pairs.

The ranch operates on roughly 80 owned acres with an additional 50 leased, and the land's north-facing slope and year-round winds were central to the choice of belted Galloways — a smaller, hardy breed that handles Vermont winters well and causes less pasture damage during wet-soil conditions. The cattle are grass-fed only, with no supplemental grain. During summer, the herd rotates daily onto fresh pasture; in winter, bale grazing keeps manure and organic matter spread evenly across the fields rather than concentrated in feeding areas. Hay comes from neighboring local farms.

For anyone looking for belted Galloway cattle in Vermont, the ranch's approach centers on regenerative land stewardship — using the animals themselves as a tool for soil health and forage management rather than treating pasture care as a separate operation.
