Phi Beta Paca': Alpacas & Yarns
Phi Beta Paca: Alpacas & Yarns raises alpacas in El Prado, New Mexico, situated in the high-altitude landscape of the Taos area, about an hour north of Santa Fe. The farm is run by Frana Biederman and offers alpacas for sale in New Mexico alongside a line of yarns spun directly from the farm's own animals.
The breeding program takes a long-view approach to genetics, emphasizing the development of multiple generations rather than rapid herd turnover. The foundation of the herd traces back to NGG Julietta, whose daughter Aurora and Aurora's offspring have carried champion-level fleece traits forward across successive generations. Herdsire Phi Beta Paca's Hot Stuff earned 2X Reserve Color Champion recognition for fleece and placed second in a large halter class at GWAS 2008, and his half-brother Apollo added a Reserve Color Champion title at the 2011 GWAS along with a blue ribbon at AOBA Nationals that same year.
The farm's focus on ultra-fine fleece combined with density runs through both the dam and sire lines, with Biederman emphasizing that strong dams are as central to producing quality cria as the herdsires. Yarns produced from the farm's alpacas are available directly, giving fiber enthusiasts a farm-to-skein connection to the Taos-area herd.
