Locustbrae Farm
Locustbrae Farm has raised registered Scottish Highland cattle in Alfred Station, New York, in the rolling hills of Allegany County in Western New York, since 1978. Rory and Debra MacCrea, who started the herd with just three heifers purchased with wedding gift money, have built this into a third-generation family operation spanning 250 acres.
The farm's approach to raising highland cattle for sale in New York centers on grass-based husbandry and ecological self-sufficiency. The herd grazes on a mix of clover, orchard grass, trefoil, and other native forages, supplemented with clover and alfalfa hay grown and harvested on the property. This pasture-centered system, about an hour south of Rochester, supports both the production of registered breeding stock and grass-fed beef.
Selection at Locustbrae has long emphasized traditional conformation traits — level toplines, depth of body, and width — paired with production records to identify cattle that are both functional and true to the breed's heritage. The farm actively works to preserve the Scottish identity of the herd, including naming animals in Scottish Gaelic, and focuses on avoiding conformational faults that have crept into some modern highland lines.
