Appalachian Farmstead
Appalachian Farmstead has been raising miniature Mediterranean donkeys in Knoxville, Tennessee since 2004, building one of the more decorated show programs among miniature Mediterranean donkey breeders in Tennessee. Dennis and Peggy Vonderfecht founded the program after attending a show in Lexington, Virginia, where they purchased their first six donkeys from Frontier Legends Miniature Donkeys in Texas, followed by additional stock from Country Music Miniature Donkeys, also in Texas.
The breeding program is intentionally small, producing only a limited number of foals each year, with a focus on conformation, pedigree, and disposition. That selective approach has yielded consistent results on the national show circuit, with multiple championship titles earned through the NMDA, ACOSA, and NASMDA. Among the farm's most accomplished animals is a jennet who accumulated five national championships between 2016 and 2024 and is recognized as having won more NMDA and ADMS national titles than any donkey in the association's history. Herdsires have included national champion jacks whose offspring have gone on to win at major shows across the region and internationally.
Located west of Knoxville near the Tennessee River corridor, roughly an hour from Chattanooga, Appalachian Farmstead produces donkeys sought for showing, breeding, and as companion animals.
