Unknown Morph
Unknown morph is used when an Indian star tortoise can be identified as Geochelone elegans but its morph, locality type, or family background is not documented. The normal species appearance is already bold: a rounded dark carapace with radiating yellow lines that break up the outline in grass and scrub habitat. Hatchlings and adults may differ in contrast, so appearance alone is a weak guide to ancestry.
For a keeper, unknown morph should be treated as a husbandry and paperwork note rather than a discount care category. Indian star tortoises need warm, bright, well-ventilated housing, secure outdoor grazing in suitable climates, and close monitoring for dehydration or respiratory problems. Legal provenance is especially important because wild collection has placed pressure on this species. A credible seller, rescue, or institution should be able to show captive-bred origin or explain exactly what documentation exists.
