Meishan

The Meishan pig is a distinctive and highly regarded breed originating from the Jiangsu province of China, specifically named after the region's Meishan district. This breed is one of the oldest domesticated pig breeds, known for its unique characteristics and adaptability. Meishan pigs are medium-sized animals renowned for their wrinkled black skin, large floppy ears, and docile temperament, making them easily recognizable. Unlike many other breeds, Meishans are particularly fertile, reaching sexual maturity at an early age and often producing large litters, sometimes with over a dozen piglets per litter.

Their robust reproductive capability is complemented by excellent mothering instincts, which contribute to high survival rates of the offspring. Meishan pigs have a remarkable ability to efficiently convert feed into weight gain, although their meat tends to be fattier, which is sometimes preferred in producing specialty pork products known for their flavor and marbling. Adaptable to various climates, Meishans are hardy animals, historically thriving in both tropical and temperate regions. In recent years, their genetic traits have been sought after globally, as they are used in crossbreeding programs to enhance the reproductive performance of other pig breeds.
