Ocelot

Leopardus pardalis

The ocelot, Leopardus pardalis, is a medium-sized wild cat from the Americas, patterned with dark rosettes, streaks, and spots over a tawny coat. It ranges through tropical forest, scrub, mangroves, and thorny cover, hunting mostly at night for rodents, birds, reptiles, and other small animals. Although it is smaller than a jaguar or puma, it is a strong, secretive predator with a long tail, large eyes, and a coat once heavily targeted by the fur trade.

Ocelots are not domestic cats, and private ownership is restricted or unsuitable in many places. Accredited zoos and sanctuaries manage them with secure enclosures, climbing structure, den privacy, scent enrichment, whole-prey or balanced carnivore diets, and minimal stress during veterinary work. Conservation efforts often focus on habitat corridors, road mortality, anti-trafficking work, and camera-trap monitoring. Orphaned or confiscated animals need professional facilities because human imprinting can prevent release.
