Lappet-Faced Vulture

Torgos tracheliotos

The lappet-faced vulture, Torgos tracheliotos, is one of the largest Old World vultures, native mainly to dry savannas, deserts, and open woodland in Africa with a smaller range in the Arabian Peninsula. Its bare pinkish head, loose skin folds or lappets, massive hooked bill, dark wings, and pale thighs make it easy to separate from more gregarious vultures at a carcass. This species often arrives singly or in pairs, and its strong bill can open tough hides that smaller scavengers cannot breach.

Care in zoos and specialist facilities calls for very large flight space, sturdy perches, privacy around nest platforms, and a carcass-based diet that supplies bone, hide, muscle, and organs safely. Pairs can be sensitive during breeding, so disturbance near nests is kept low and chick development is monitored without excessive handling. In the wild, lappet-faced vultures are threatened by poisoned carcasses, persecution, collisions, electrocution, and reduced nesting habitat. Conservation teams use anti-poisoning work, tracking, nest protection, and rescue of injured birds to support remaining populations. This is a protected wildlife species, not a private pet or ordinary aviary bird.
