Orange-Winged Amazon

Amazona amazonica

The orange-winged amazon, Amazona amazonica, is a green parrot native to northern South America and parts of the Caribbean, including Trinidad and Tobago. Its orange wing patches are most visible in flight, while perched birds show green plumage, blue and yellow on the head, and a sturdy amazon-parrot build. It is a vocal, intelligent species that travels, feeds, and roosts socially in forests, savannas, mangroves, and cultivated areas.

In aviculture, orange-winged amazons require experienced, long-term homes. They need roomy housing, daily activity, chewing outlets, social interaction, bathing, and a diet built around formulated food, vegetables, greens, and limited high-fat treats. Mature birds can become loud, territorial, or selective about handling, especially during breeding season. Responsible acquisition means checking legal paperwork, avoiding wild-caught trade, planning for a lifespan that may span decades, and giving pairs privacy if breeding is attempted.

Colors: Lutino, Normal Green, Pied
