Gene Reference
Extension (Ed)

Controls whether black pigment can be produced at all.

  • Ed Produces black-based pigment.
  • ed Recessive red; ed/ed = red/sorrel only.
Roan (Rn)

White hairs interspersed throughout coat.

  • Rn Roan patterning; Rn/Rn is embryonic lethal.
  • rn No roan.
Dun (D)

Adds primitive markings and softens the base color.

  • D Dun dilution with dorsal stripe, shoulder cross, and leg barring.
  • d No dun effect; full intensity.
Light Points (NLP)

Controls pale muzzle/eye rings, belly, and inner legs.

  • lp Standard light points.
  • NLP Removes light points; NLP/NLP = dark points, lp/NLP carriers look light but pass NLP 50%.
Brown (Br)

Controls brown coloration intensity.

  • br No brown effect.
  • Br Br/br = brown; Br/Br = chocolate/dark brown.
Dominant White / White Spotted (W)

Ranges from minimal white hairs to nearly white coats.

  • W Dominant white; foals often white and pass W to 50% of offspring.
  • Ws White spotted; also passed to 50% of offspring.
  • w No white patterning detected.

W/W or Ws/Ws are typically not viable; W/Ws viability is unknown.
