The Mountain Quail (Oreortyx pictus) is a distinctive and robust bird native to the mountainous regions of the western United States. Renowned for its striking appearance, this quail species features a mix of rich earthy tones, with rust-colored belly and flanks, complemented by contrasting gray and olive hues on its back and wings. Its most distinguishing characteristic is the elegant plume of two straight feathers that extend from its head, giving it a regal and attentive demeanor. Inhabiting dense shrubs and forested areas, Mountain Quails prefer elevations ranging from the chaparral-covered foothills to subalpine regions. They are well adapted to rugged terrain, using their strong legs to deftly maneuver in steep, rocky environments. Mountain Quails lead a predominantly terrestrial lifestyle, feeding on a diet that includes seeds, bulbs, berries, and insects, which they forage for in small, family-oriented groups.
