Chinese Giant Salamander

Andrias davidianus

The Chinese Giant Salamander (Andrias davidianus) is the largest amphibian in the world, capable of growing up to 1.8 meters (about 5.9 feet) in length. This enigmatic and ancient species is endemic to the rocky, fast-flowing mountain streams and lakes of China. It has a distinctive, flattened body with mottled grayish-green or brown skin that allows it to blend seamlessly into its aquatic environment. Notably, the salamander's skin contains folds that expand when submerged, aiding in respiration through gas exchange, which complements its underdeveloped lungs. Its small eyes and reliance on a lateral line system highlight its adaptation to murky aquatic habitats where visibility is limited.

The Chinese Giant Salamander feeds primarily on fish, crustaceans, and insects, using a powerful suction mechanism to capture prey. It is a nocturnal creature, often sheltering in underwater burrows or beneath rocks during the daytime. Unfortunately, this unique species faces severe threats from habitat destruction, pollution, and over-exploitation for the traditional medicine trade and as a luxury food item. As a result, Andrias davidianus is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, prompting significant conservation initiatives aimed at habitat protection and breeding programs to prevent its extinction.
