Sumatran
The Sumatran tiger is the island tiger form native to Sumatra, usually recognized by its relatively small size, dark orange coat, and dense black striping. It is one of the clearest examples of a tiger label that belongs in conservation, zoo care, and field research rather than private animal trade. The name points to a real geographic population with serious pressure from habitat loss and human conflict.
Zoos and conservation teams manage Sumatran tigers through studbook records, genetic planning, protected-contact husbandry, and public education tied to habitat protection. Enclosures must support water use, cover, scent work, and retreat from constant viewing. In any record, Sumatran identity should be based on documented ancestry rather than appearance alone, because accurate regional labels are central to responsible breeding and conservation messaging.
